Steps in a Skincare Routine – A Quick Guide

A step-by-step facial care routine consists of several basic steps, each of which prepares the skin for the next. Both the order of these steps and the proper use of carefully selected skincare products are essential. This will enhance the effectiveness of each product and help you achieve a fresh, radiant complexion.

Facial Skincare Routine – Steps

The individual steps of your skincare routine should follow this order:

  1. makeup removal
  2. exfoliation
  3. toning
  4. moisturizing
  5. additional protection with UV filters.

The first three steps are often referred to collectively as facial cleansing, and makeup removal can be done either wet (e.g., with foaming cleansers or gels) or dry (with micellar water or cleansing milks). It’s worth noting that exfoliating dead skin cells with a scrub should be done only 1–2 times a week, no more often.

Steps 1, 2, and 3: A Step-by-Step Guide to Facial Cleansing

Both your evening and morning skincare routines should always begin with a thorough cleansing of your skin. This is the first and most important step in any skincare routine.

Although it might seem that the only thing that matters for skin health is removing makeup right before bed, it’s important to realize that we usually apply richer creams—and sometimes facial oils—at night, and any residue from these products needs to be washed off in the morning. In addition, our skin produces sebum even while we sleep, and contact with a pillow—which harbors dust mites, microorganisms, and dust—can clog pores and cause blackheads.

A proper step-by-step facial cleansing routine can look like this:

  1. Apply the facial cleanser to slightly damp skin and massage it in to create a lather. Our Complete cleansing and mattifying gel with willowherb and cedar extracts works great for this. You can use a suitable brush for this step.
    2. Rinse the gel thoroughly with lukewarm water.
    3. Pat your skin dry with a towel.
    4. Spray your face with toner or soak a cotton pad with it and wipe your face. Toner is a product that perfectly complements makeup removal—it soothes and refreshes, restoring the skin’s proper pH balance. For this step, we especially recommend the ENLIVENING Moisturizing Facial Toner, featuring an ideal blend of three plant waters: rose, aloe vera, and green tea, enriched with green tea and French rose extracts.

Importantly, a proper skincare routine should also include regular exfoliation every 3–4 days. In this case, immediately after removing your makeup, you should skip the toner and perform an exfoliating treatment instead. It’s best to exfoliate in the evening and apply a face mask afterward. Removing dead skin cells enhances the nourishing effects of the mask.

Step 4: The order in which to apply skincare products to effectively moisturize your face

Once we’ve completed the first three steps of a skincare routine—makeup removal, exfoliation, and toning—it’s time to move on to a slightly more complex step: daily moisturizing. The difficulty of this step lies primarily in the fact that there are so many different types of moisturizing and nourishing products on the market: face creams, eye creams, serums, oils, and masks. It’s easy to get confused about the best order to use them in to ensure your skincare routine is as effective as possible. We’ll walk you through this step for your morning and evening routines using our organic Phenomé products as an example.

The order in which to apply skincare products to your face in the morning:

  1. After toning your skin, immediately apply the revitalizing serum. Be sure to gently pat it in with your fingertips and wait 2 minutes for it to absorb completely.
  2. Apply Happy Eye Cream, which brightens, reduces wrinkles, and moisturizes. On the upper eyelid, pat it in from the inner corner of the eye toward the outer corner, and on the lower eyelid, do the opposite.
  3. Gently pat on your favorite daytime face cream, such as the 24-HOUR Moisturizer for Normal and Sensitive Skin ⠀. Massage it in with gentle, circular motions. This is a good time to give yourself a gentle facial massage to stimulate blood circulation in the skin.

The order in which you apply skincare products to your face at night can remain the same. However, it’s worth noting that your evening skincare routine can be expanded to include the following two products:

  • REPLENISHING Moisturizing Face Oil – you can either mix it with your moisturizer or apply a few drops of the oil to damp, cleansed skin and skip the moisturizer,
  • WRINKLE RESIST Rejuvenating and Nourishing Mask for All Skin Types – use it 2–3 times a week to provide additional nourishment and help smooth out wrinkles. We recommend applying it immediately after removing your makeup and leaving it on for 15 minutes. Then rinse off any remaining product with lukewarm water. Alternatively, you can also leave it on your face overnight and wash it off in the morning.
