Choosing the right skincare products is the secret to beautiful, healthy skin. However, it can sometimes be difficult to find products that are perfectly suited to your skin’s needs. This seemingly simple task can actually be quite a challenge. We’ll do our best to make it easier for you.
A friend recommended a great cream that improved her skin, but you haven’t noticed any results? Don’t worry—it’s not that there’s anything wrong with you; it’s just that the product wasn’t right for you, or rather, it didn’t suit your skin type. What works for others won’t necessarily work for you. To choose the perfect skincare products, first determine your skin type and its needs—this is very important!
Why is it important to choose cosmetics based on your skin type?
Facial care using the right skincare products is no longer just a promise, but a guarantee of the best results. These products will address your skin’s concerns, improve its condition, and help you enjoy a healthy, radiant complexion. If you choose the wrong facial products, you may end up doing your skin more harm than good. The wrong products will exacerbate the problem you’re already dealing with and may even lead to new skin issues, such as dryness, a burning sensation due to irritation, acne, and more.
How do I choose the right skincare products?
Before you find the perfect skincare product for you, there’s a process to go through. First, determine your skin type and identify your skin concerns. This will help you understand what kind of care your skin needs. At Phenomé, we’ve identified four main skin types:
- Couperose skin is thin, more sensitive, and dry, making it more prone to damage and irritation. It tends to show visible dilated blood vessels and erythema—a temporary reddening of the skin that occurs, for example, as a result of stress, eating spicy foods, or temperature fluctuations.
- Skin with discoloration—characterized by an uneven complexion. This may include darker spots, such as age spots and sunspots, as well as a general dullness of the skin. It often appears rougher and more wrinkled, especially in areas where pigmentation spots are present. Discoloration, particularly in areas highly exposed to the sun—such as the face, neckline, or hands—can become more noticeable as the skin loses its elasticity.
- Skin showing visible signs of aging—it is thin, less elastic, and less firm; sagging is very often noticeable, especially on the face, which makes it look tired and in need of rejuvenation. As a result of impaired microcirculation, the accumulation of dead skin cells, and reduced nourishment, the skin loses its natural freshness and becomes dull.
- Skin in need of a lift—it’s practically “crying out” for help. As a result of collagen and elastin loss, wrinkles begin to appear on the skin’s surface—some superficial, others deeper—depending on the degree of firmness loss. The skin becomes flaccid; due to a decrease in collagen and elastin production, the oval of the face begins to change, and furrows form in the lower parts of the face. Mature skin in need of a lift is more prone to dehydration, causing it to lose its fresh appearance, and wrinkles on its surface become more visible.
Finally, look for samples of the product you’re interested in. This is a good idea before you buy the full-size product. That way, you can see how your skin reacts to it, whether you like its texture, and so on.
How does testing samples help you find the perfect cosmetics?
We’ve already established that daily skincare products need to be “tailor-made.” When testing a product, you have the chance to observe your skin’s reaction—whether it will get along with the new product and how it will respond to it. This is especially important when you need a change and are looking for something new. This way, you can draw your first conclusions about the product and check its scent and texture
In addition to its practical benefits, testing cosmetics also has a psychological aspect. It provides the pleasure of experiencing something new. The texture, scent, and how it absorbs—all of these factors are extremely important. You should check whether you feel comfortable after using the product. After trying it out, you’ll know whether the new product is right for you.
Proper skincare and skin type
Every skin type has its own needs and requires a special approach, which is why personalized skincare offers many benefits.
- Couperose skin – skincare should focus on soothing the skin and restoring its balance. It is very important to treat the skin gently, especially when cleansing. In the morning, use a cleansing and moisturizing milk, such as LEAVE-ON, and a toner to restore the skin’s proper pH balance.
The next step is moisturizing—before applying your cream, we recommend using a serum, such as the SOOTHING serum for sensitive skin. Your day cream should strengthen blood vessels, which is why the IDEAL strengthening cream for couperose and sensitive skin is perfect for this purpose. Don’t forget the eye area, which needs intense moisturization. In the evening, before going to bed, remove your makeup—ideally in two steps: first with a cleansing milk, then with a foaming cleanser. When choosing a night cream, opt for one that’s soothing yet lifting, such as UPLIFT ME.
- Skin with discoloration—your skincare routine should focus on intensive nourishment and hydration, while also lightening unwanted pigmentation spots. During your morning skincare routine, focus on a brightening facial cleanser—we recommend the CALMING Brightening Facial Wash. Don’t forget to tone your skin, which will not only restore its proper pH balance but also hydrate it. By choosing the BRILLIANT Toner, you’ll brighten your skin and restore its radiance.
The next, very important step is moisturizing. The cream should be lightweight and have a brightening effect, like our favorite—the LUMINOUS Apple Day Cream. And speaking of brightening, the eye area deserves it too. How about a cream with the charming name HAPPY? Not only will it brighten, but it will also have anti-wrinkle properties—exactly what we love most. Evening skincare for skin with discoloration starts with makeup removal, toning, and moisturizing—ideally a two-step routine, meaning a serum and an anti-wrinkle cream. And for special occasions, use the VITALITY SHINE Vitamin C mask, which will give your skin a radiant glow.
- Skin showing visible signs of aging—the number one goal is to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and the number two goal is deep nourishment that gives the skin a youthful glow. In the morning, use a cleansing and moisturizing milk, toner, and then an intensely rejuvenating cream—here, No. 22 Day and Night Serum with orchid stem cell extract is ideal, as it effectively rejuvenates the face. The face cream should also visibly smooth out wrinkles, which is why the No. 11 Rejuvenating Day Cream is perfect for this purpose.
The delicate eye area is very prone to wrinkles, so it’s worth pampering it with a lifting cream that also lifts the upper eyelid (like our EYE ME UP). Follow up your evening makeup removal and toning routine with an intensely rejuvenating serum and face cream. You can use the No. 22 intensely rejuvenating day and night serum and the No. 33 cream.
- Skin in need of a lift—the primary focus is on intensive hydration and restoring the hydrolipid barrier. An important step is to treat the skin with potent active ingredients that have a lifting effect. Your morning skincare routine shouldn’t be without a cleansing milk, which will remove impurities from your skin, and a toner.
Moisturizing? A two-step routine is best, combining an anti-wrinkle and brightening serum—the SMOOTH ME Vitamin C Serum is perfect—with a deeply moisturizing cream that has a lightweight formula, like our LUSCIOUS Moisturizing Cream.
Meanwhile, Phenome’s EYE ME UP lifting eye and upper eyelid cream will refresh and rejuvenate your eyes. For your nighttime skincare routine, in addition to a cleanser and toner, it’s worth using a serum with anti-wrinkle and rejuvenating properties, followed by a powerful lifting cream—check out our cream with active peptides and ectoine for maximum nourishment and a lifting effect. Don’t forget the eye area—this is where the skin ages the fastest. The lifting (clinically proven) EYE ME UP cream will meet your expectations.
How should cosmetic samples be tested properly?
If you want to try out new cosmetics, it’s a good idea to follow a few rules.
Read the ingredient lists—if you’re allergic to a certain ingredient, check to see if it’s listed in the new product.
Perform a skin test—apply a small amount of the product to clean skin, such as the crook of your elbow, your neck, or behind your ear. Leave it on overnight. Then wash it off and wait two days. During this time, observe your skin to see how it reacts to the new product and whether there are any adverse reactions.
Don’t test new cosmetics right before an important event—irritated skin and puffy eyes won’t just look bad, they can also ruin your mood.
