A diet rich in antioxidants is the key not only to a healthy body but also to radiant, youthful skin. What exactly should you eat to not only feel great but also look great?
Remember that nutrients are also absorbed through the pores of your skin. So the products you use for your daily skincare routine are just as important as what’s on your plate. Find out how to effectively enhance the benefits of your skincare products with an antioxidant-rich diet.
Antioxidants—what are they?
Antioxidants are substances that combat free radicals. In doing so, they prevent damage to the body’s cells, slow down the aging process, and minimize the risk of diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancer. You’ll find these essential components for a long, healthy life in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as in flavonoids and carotenoids. So, what does an antioxidant-rich diet consist of?
The Most Important Antioxidants
The good news for vegetarians is that the best sources of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables—the more colorful, the better. Importantly, in our climate, antioxidants can be found in both fresh and frozen produce. However, while freezing does not affect the antioxidant content, cooking does. In most cases, it is therefore best to choose unprocessed fruits and vegetables. The exceptions are tomatoes and grapes. While tomatoes are best eaten stewed or cooked, we recommend grapes in the form of wine.
Some of the most easily absorbed antioxidants are found in lettuce, bell peppers, spinach, kale, apples, citrus fruits, pomegranates, and kiwis.
Legumes, nuts, dark chocolate, green and black tea, red wine, cocoa, and coffee are also rich in antioxidants.
Chokeberries, rosehips, blueberries, blackcurrants, and cranberries, on the other hand, are rich in flavonoids.
It’s worth noting that the opposite of antioxidants—that is, foods containing free radicals—are baked goods with long shelf lives, as well as fried foods like potato chips and french fries.
Antioxidants in cosmetics
Antioxidants in cosmetics are non-toxic ingredients and are therefore well-tolerated by the skin. They are resistant to external factors. So, complement a diet rich in antioxidants with external care. This way, you will not only regenerate and moisturize your skin but also restore its proper hydrolipid barrier. Antioxidants in creams also stimulate collagen production and help eliminate signs of fatigue, such as dark circles under the eyes or dull skin. Their ability to slow down aging processes is utilized in many anti-wrinkle cosmetics.
Check the label of your cosmetic product for the following ingredients:
- Vitamin E, especially when combined with vitamin C—both vitamins have anti-aging properties, but it is when used together that they exhibit the strongest antioxidant power. Vitamin E easily penetrates the deepest layers of the skin. It’s worth remembering that for it to be effective, its concentration in the formula should be at least 2%. If you’re looking for a high concentration of these ingredients, try the SMOOTH ME⠀ anti-wrinkle and brightening face serum with vitamin C.
- Apple extract – contains phloretin, which helps repair damaged DNA in skin cells. You’ll find it in BEDAZZLED’s Brightening Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream.
- Pomegranate extract – is rich in ellagic acid and polyphenols. A light eye cream works great here.
- Grape leaf extract – a valuable source of resveratrol, one of the most powerful antioxidants you can provide your skin with through the REJUVENATING anti-wrinkle cream with Rhodiola rosea.
You’ll find many other antioxidants in Phenomé cosmetics.
