Women can be divided into two types: those who use facial toner every day, and those who don’t yet know why.
For years, toner was a favorite cosmetic of Polish women, then suddenly lost popularity, wrongly supplanted by micellar lotions. Today, it is making a comeback in the glory of a key skin care product. And often with a surprisingly interesting composition.
Face toner, a must have, but what does it actually give me?
A tonic is a light, liquid water-based cosmetic enriched with skin care additives. Most often they are plant extracts, vitamins or hyaluronic acid. The choice of active substances depends on what skin it is intended for and what task it faces. Because although it seems to be just water with additives, a tonic is an important player in the care process, and its use really brings results.
First, it gently removes residual impurities and refreshes the skin. Secondly, it provides it with nutrients, moisturizing or soothing substances. For example, the BRILLIANT revitalizing facial toner, one of Phenomé’s bestsellers, contains as many as 20 active ingredients, including natural vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids, so it promotes exfoliation of the epidermis, thereby brightening and illuminating the skin. It also has aloe vera juice and hyaluronic acid, whose use improves skin elasticity, as well as fruit vinegar, with exfoliating and smoothing properties. So don’t let anyone be fooled by the tonic’s watery form. Even if it were to be diluted, when administered regularly, morning and evening, it will be like a rock-breaking drop.
There is a third argument for using a tonic, an arch-important one: it restores the skin’s proper pH.
The skin’s pH, or facial toner can
Most of the products we apply to our skin – gels, micellar liquids, lotions or cleansing pastes – in addition to dissolving and collecting dirt, sebum and dust, incidentally change the natural pH level of our skin from acidic to alkaline. What is the significance of this? Well, exactly. If the pH of the skin is too high (alkaline), the skin begins to dry out and becomes prone to irritation. Hence the need for a product that will lower the pH – and this is the moment when a tonic, all white, steps in. The tonic helps lower the skin’s pH to 4.5 – 6, which preserves its microbiological balance and protects it from bacterial growth. And that’s not all: skin prepared in this way more easily accepts the beneficial ingredients of serums or moisturizers.
How to use the tonic
Tonic is applied to the skin twice a day, after washing it thoroughly. We can pat it in with our fingertips, or apply it with a cotton ball and wipe our face with it, while performing the final stage of cleansing. A lot of people, since micellar liquids appeared, perform this final chord with them. It’s better not to do it that way! Micellar liquids contain detergents, leaving them on the skin is like not rinsing the dishwashing liquid off the plate. It’s a good idea to rinse your face with water one more time, and then calm it down with a toner. Now it’s ready to move on to the next stages of skin care: patting in a serum, and when it’s absorbed, applying a suitable cream. On hot days, when the skin is tired from the heat and sun, a tonic is also useful for refreshment. Spraying it on the face will bring relief to dry skin.
How to choose a facial tonic
We adjust the facial toner just like other cosmetics: to the type of skin, but also to our expectations – do we want it to brighten the skin, soothe it, soothe it or maybe just moisturize it? And always read what the product contains. The best ingredients are those that are natural, plant-based and organically grown; after all, everything we put on our skin penetrates it and enters the bloodstream.
