The health and appearance of your skin depend largely on how well-hydrated it is. A natural moisturizing hydrosol can help care for dry skin. Find out how it works and how to incorporate it into your daily skincare routine.
Hydrosol – what is it?
Facial hydrosols are produced by distilling plants to extract essential oils. However, they are much more than just a byproduct of extracting the best from plants. It turns out that soluble plant particles are just as beneficial for the skin when delivered in the form of light floral water as they are in the form of an oily extract. What’s more, this water is gentle and can be used on all skin types.
Facial hydrosol – how is it better than plain water?
Water makes up between 50 and as much as 99 percent of the composition of cosmetics! It is thanks to water that active ingredients reach their intended targets and the skin regains its elasticity. The effectiveness of skincare products therefore depends to a large extent on the quality of the water. Most cosmetic companies use distilled, demineralized, or deionized water. This makes it neutral and prevents it from reacting with active ingredients. However, studies indicate that products based on floral waters are significantly more effective because they provide the skin with an easily absorbed dose of vitamins and minerals. Tests conducted by Phenomé show that after just 5 days of using cosmetics based on hydrosols, the skin is 10% more hydrated than when using plain water.
Which hydrosol should I choose?
The following are most recommended for dry skin:
- aloe vera hydrosol – a highly concentrated product containing as many as 200 beneficial compounds. In addition to moisturizing, it also tones, soothes, calms, and regenerates the skin. It is also a common ingredient in anti-wrinkle treatments;
- Rose hydrosol – recommended primarily for mature skin, where proper hydration helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve firmness. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, soothes irritation, and promotes cell regeneration. It is also effective as a hydrosol for combination and oily skin, as it helps regulate the skin’s natural processes.
Hydrosol – how to use it?
A moisturizing hydrosol is the easiest to use as a base for daily facial care products. A natural facial hydrosol is ideal as a base for cosmetics because it enhances the effects of other extracts and essences. Phenomé stands out by completely replacing regular water with hydrosols in all of its products. Many of them contain several different plant waters, making them even more effective.
When should you use skincare products containing a hydrating hydrosol?
The abundance of valuable nutrients in plant waters makes hydrosols an excellent choice for all skin types. Cosmetics made with hydrosols can even be used by pregnant women or people with allergy-prone skin.
We especially recommend using natural hydrosols in skincare products after winter, when dry skin needs to regenerate, as well as during the summer months, when it is exposed to heat and UV radiation.
It’s also a good idea to try a simple at-home test to see if your skin needs extra moisture. Just pinch a small patch of skin between two fingers and see how quickly it returns to its normal state when you release it. Optimally hydrated skin should smooth out instantly, while wrinkles that remain on the skin for a longer period of time indicate insufficient hydration.
